South Dakota has been the focal point for a lot of severe storms lately some with really intense winds. Severe thunderstorms rolled through the area on Tuesday, with hurricane-force winds impacting some parts of the area once again. Unfortunately, there will be more storms coming later this week as well with more dangerous weather expected.

South Dakota seems to be getting hit awfully hard this year, and I know there have been some really awful tornadoes, large hail and very strong winds. August 5, 2025 was another day with some notable storm reports. I frequently check the storm reports page from the Storm Prediction Center, because it gives me a good overview of what has been happening in storms across the country. I saw one wind report that caught my eye from the storms over the last 24 hours, 99 mph near Watertown, South Dakota.

As the graphic above indicates, there were all types of severe storm reports as the storms moved through. A tornado report, some large hail reports and quite a few wind reports as the storms moved to the south and east. I found a view of the storms as they were creating the strong winds that led to the above reports from the NOAA National Centers for Environmental Information website. Watertown is located under the eastern side of that line of storms that is oriented west-east.

As I mentioned earlier, more storms are forecast through the end of the week. Storms are predicted on Thursday and Friday as well, with a greater chance on Friday. The storms on Thursday are expected to produce large hail mainly in parts of Montana and North Dakota. Friday's threat is further east, over parts of North Dakota, South Dakota, western Minnesota and parts of Nebraska and Iowa as well. Ryan Hall, Y'all on YouTube does a nice job of summarizing the storm threats expected for the rest of this week. Be sure to have a way to get any watch and warning information and keep an eye on the sky as storms are likely through the rest of this week.
